Background of the Study
Altmetric tools have emerged as complementary instruments to traditional citation metrics, capturing the online attention and broader societal impact of scholarly work. At Ekiti State University, altmetric measures such as social media mentions, news coverage, and online engagement are increasingly used to track the dissemination of research outputs. This study assesses how altmetric tools provide a more nuanced picture of research influence, particularly for disciplines where conventional citations may not fully capture public impact (Adewuyi, 2023). By examining the relationship between altmetric scores and research visibility, the study explores whether these alternative metrics can predict academic and social engagement more effectively. The investigation takes into account factors like digital dissemination channels, user interaction, and trends in open-access publications, offering insights into the evolving landscape of research evaluation. This research is timely given the rise of digital scholarship and the need to adapt evaluation methods to include non-traditional impact indicators (Olu, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite their growing popularity, altmetric tools at Ekiti State University face challenges in standardization and interpretation. Discrepancies in altmetric scores, potential biases in online engagement, and the difficulty in correlating these scores with academic quality have raised concerns. These challenges impede the effective integration of altmetrics into traditional research evaluation frameworks, leading to potential undervaluation or misinterpretation of research dissemination efforts. This study aims to identify these issues and explore solutions to enhance the reliability of altmetric measures (Uche, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the effectiveness of altmetric tools in tracking research dissemination.
To identify challenges associated with altmetric data interpretation.
To recommend strategies to improve the reliability of altmetric assessments.
Research Questions
How effective are altmetric tools in measuring research dissemination?
What challenges affect the use of altmetrics at the university?
What measures can enhance the reliability of altmetric indicators?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a critical assessment of altmetric tools and their role in expanding the scope of research evaluation. Its findings will help refine the integration of digital metrics into academic assessment practices (Babatunde, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to examining altmetric tools for tracking research dissemination among scholars at Ekiti State University. It does not extend to traditional citation metrics or other evaluation methods.
